The event, organized by the National Service of Agro Alimentary Health, Safety, and Quality (SENASICA) and the North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO,) concluded with the participation of 400 technicians from 16 countries.

The experts considered that after the experiences obtained in
Sao Pablo, Brazil and Florida, U.S.A., a control strategy for the HLB, also known as Yellow Dragon, shall be carried out in a coordinated and regional manner, which probe critical to its success.

They determined that for the short and medium term, the only alternative is the elimination of contamination sources, control of the vector, and the use of healthy nursery plants. However, t
he long term outlook for sustainable citrus industry will necessarily mean to find HLB resistant or tolerant scions and varieties,

The specialists emphasized the need of increasing resources to research, which is the one that may provide results to make the citrus culture a sustainable activity. They also stressed the importance of continuing diffusion of information and training of producers, nursery operators, and owners of plants in urban zones, for an early detection of the problem.

On this regard, Francisco Javier Trujillo, SENASICA General Director of Plant Health, urged the attendees to spread the obtained knowledge into their countries, since the resulting multiplicative effect is the real challenge and which marks the success of the Workshop.

He added that the agronomy will have to go ahead of the research, passing, assimilating, and, mostly, applying the information promptly and with commitment, given that is the combination of all these what is required to get the objectives of protection of the citrus culture not only in Mexico but in the whole region.
